This story continued for an entire week. Every day, the witch checked to see if Hansel had gotten fat, and every day, Hansel gave her the twig.
Alla fine la strega si stancò di aspettare, l'ottavo giorno disse a Gretel: “Vieni qua marmocchia, Accendi il forno, oggi mangerò bambino arrosto con carote e patate! Controlla se il forno è abbastanza caldo da arrostire tuo fratello”.
Finally, the witch got tired of waiting. On the eighth day, she said to Gretel: "Come here, little brat, light the oven. Today I am eating roasted boy with carrots and potatoes! Check if the oven is hot enough to roast your brother."
Ma Gretel era una bambina furba e aveva un altro piano. Iniziò a piangere e disse: “sono troppo stupida! Come faccio a sapere se il forno è abbastanza caldo? Puoi farmelo vedere?”
But Gretel was a clever child and she had another plan. She started crying and said: "I am too stupid. How do I know if the oven is hot enough? Can you show me?"
La strega borbottò e si lamentò: “Inutile bambina! Controllerò il forno da sola”.
The witch muttered and grumbled: "Useless child! I'll check the oven myself."
La strega si piegò per guardare il fuoco che bruciava con fiamme arancioni e Gretel la spinse velocemente nel forno, chiudendo la porta. SBAM!
Quella fu la fine della strega.
The witch bent down to look at fire (which was) burning with orange flames, and quickly Gretel pushed her into the oven, closing the door. THUD!
That was the end of the witch.
Gretel aprì la gabbia di Hansel e i bambini riempirono un cesto con torte, biscotti, crostate e caramelle poi corsero più veloce che potevano.
Gretel unlocked Hansel’s cage, and the children filled a basket with cakes, cookies, pies, and candies, then they ran away as fast as they could.
Corsero tutta la notte, attraverso il bosco, sotto il ponte, strisciarono attraverso il buco nella recinzione, girarono a sinistra, poi a destra, sinistra, destra, sinistra, destra. Alla fine sentirono qualcuno che tagliava la legna da lontano.
They ran all night, through the forest, under the bridge, they crawled through the hole in the fence, they turned left, they turned right, left, right, left, right. Eventually they heard someone cutting wood in the distance.
Era il taglialegna! I bambini corsero dal padre e lo abbracciarono e baciarono. Il papà pianse e pianse ma in realtà era molto felice.
“Miei adorati bambini! Dove siete stati?”
It was the woodcutter! The children ran to their father and hugged him and kissed him. He cried and cried. But he was actually very happy.
"My beloved children! Where were you?"
Hansel e Gretel gli raccontarono tutta la storia, quando l'uomo sentì che la matrigna li aveva abbandonati nel bosco andò su tutte le furie e ordinò alla matrigna di abbandonare la casa immediatamente e non tornare mai più.
Hansel and Gretel told him the whole story. When he heard that their stepmother had abandoned them in the forest, he was furious (literally: went on all furies). He ordered the stepmother to leave the house immediately and never return.
Quella sera, Hansel e Gretel insieme con il papà festeggiarono il compleanno in ritardo, mangiarono tutti i dolci del cesto: crostata di ciliegie, torta al cioccolato, caramelle rosse e verdi, lecca-lecca blu e biscotti al cioccolato.
That night, Hansel and Gretel, together with their father, celebrated a late birthday. They ate all the sweets from the basket: cherry pie, chocolate cake, green and red candies, blue lollipops, and chocolate cookies.
Più avanti lo stesso anno, Hansel e Gretel erano nel panificio in città quando videro una anziana donna chiedere soldi per strada. Era la loro matrigna!
“Bambini! Aiutatemi per favore, ho fame!” disse la donna.
Later that year, Hansel and Gretel were in the bakery in town when they saw an old woman begging for coins in the street. It was their stepmother!
“Children! Please help me! I am hungry!” she begged.
Gretel ci pensò per un momento, andò dentro il panificio e comprò un piccolo pezzo di pane e una piccola ciotola di zuppa.
“Ecco qua”, disse Gretel, “zuppa e pane, il tuo pasto preferito!”
Hansel e Gretel non videro mai più la loro matrigna.
Gretel thought for a moment. She went inside the bakery and bought a small loaf of bread and a small bowl of soup.
“Here,” Gretel said. “Soup and bread. Your favorite meal.”
Hansel and Gretel never saw their stepmother ever again.
