Il suit le géant dans la chambre à coucher et se cache sous le lit. Il y a une harpe d’or dans un coin de la pièce.
« Bonjour ma belle harpe. Joue s’il te plaît ! », dit le géant. La harpe se met à jouer de la musique sans que personne ne touche les cordes.
He follows the giant into the bedroom and hides under the bed. There is a golden harp in a corner of the room.
“Hello, my beautiful harp! Play, please!” says the giant. The harp starts playing music without anyone touching the strings.
« Ouah ! Une harpe magique ! chuchote Jack. Cette harpe me rendrait riche et célèbre ! »
Aussitôt que le géant s’endort, Jack rampe à découvert. Il prend la harpe magique et la met dans son sac.
“Wow! A magic harp!” whispers Jack. “That harp would make me rich and famous!”
As soon as the giant falls asleep, Jack crawls out into the open. He takes the magic harp and puts it in his bag.
Mais cette fois-ci Jack est moins chanceux.
La harpe hurle : « Aidez-moi, maître ! Un humain est en train de me voler ! »
Le géant se réveille et voit Jack avec la harpe magique, la poule d’or et ses pièces d’or.
But this time, Jack isn’t so lucky. (Literally: is less lucky.)
The harp screams: “Help me, master! A human is stealing me!”
The giant wakes up and sees Jack with the magic harp, the golden hen, and his gold coins.
« ARRÊTE-TOI, VOLEUR ! »
Le géant poursuit Jack – hors de la chambre, tout le long du couloir, à travers la cuisine et jusqu’à la sortie du château.
“STOP, THIEF!”
The giant chases Jack — Out of the bedroom, all the way down the hallway, through the kitchen, and out the front door (literally: to the castle exit).
Mais Jack est plus petit et plus rapide que le géant. Jack arrive au haricot le premier et se laisse glisser. Il atteint le sol avec tous ses trésors.
But Jack is smaller and faster than the giant. Jack reaches the beanstalk first and slides down. He reaches the ground with all his treasures.
Le géant atteint le haricot et regarde en bas. Il a peur du vide. Il commence à descendre lentement.
« FAITES ATTENTION, MON MARI ! crie la géante depuis le château. LES HUMAINS PEUVENT ÊTRE DANGEREUX ! »
The giant reaches the beanstalk and looks down. He is afraid of heights. He slowly begins to climb down.
“BE CAREFUL, HUSBAND!” cries the giantess from the castle. “HUMANS CAN BE DANGEROUS!”
Jack voit le géant descendre le long du haricot. Alors il court chez lui et prend une hache. Il coupe la tige du haricot.
Schlak ! Schlak ! Schlak !
Jack sees the giant coming down the beanstalk. So he runs into the house and grabs an axe. He cuts the beanstalk.
Whack! Whack! Whack!
Soudain, le haricot casse. Le géant tombe du ciel. Il tombe, tombe, tombe, et atterrit très loin, de l’autre côté des Montagnes Brumeuses. Pouf !
Suddenly, the beanstalk breaks. The giant tumbles down from the sky. He falls down, down, down (Literally: he falls, falls, falls) and lands far away, on the other side of the Misty Mountains.
Thud!
Tout est silencieux un moment. Puis Jack entend un son étrange au loin.
« NOOOOOOOOOOOON ! »
C’est le géant. Le haricot étant couché, il n’a désormais plus aucun moyen de remonter dans son château dans les nuages.
Everything is silent for a moment. Then Jack hears a strange sound in the distance.
“NOOOOOOOooooooo!”
It’s the giant. With the beanstalk fallen down (literally: lying down), he now has no way of getting back up to his castle in the clouds.
Le géant hurle si fort que les nuages tremblent et deviennent gris. Puis quelque part dans le ciel, Jack entend Madame la Géante qui se met à pleurer. Ses larmes tombent à travers les nuages en de petites gouttes et trempent la terre.
The giant howls so loudly that the clouds shake and turn grey. Then, somewhere in the sky, Jack hears Mrs Giant start to cry. Her tears fall through the clouds in small drops, and soak the earth.
Après ça, Jack et sa mère ont une vie très confortable. La poule d’or fait de Jack un millionnaire. La harpe magique le rend célèbre. Jack épouse une femme riche et célèbre et ils ont dix enfants ensemble.
Mais Jack n’est jamais vraiment heureux.
After that, Jack and his mother have a very comfortable life. The golden hen makes Jack a millionaire. The magic harp makes him famous. Jack marries a rich and famous woman, and they have ten children together.
But Jack is never truly happy.
A chaque fois que le vent souffle, Jack entend le géant appeler sa femme. Et à chaque fois qu’il pleut, il sent les larmes de la femme du géant tomber sur lui.
Jack se sent triste et coupable.
Every time the wind blows, Jack hears the giant calling for his wife. And every time it rains, he feels the tears of the giant’s wife falling on him.
Jack feels sad and guilty.
Un jour — Jack est maintenant très vieux — il décide qu’il ne veut plus être triste. Il ouvre une boîte sur la cheminée et en sort un dernier haricot magique desséché.
One day — Jack is now very old — he decides he hasn’t want to be sad anymore. He opens a box on the fireplace and takes out one last, shrivelled magic bean.
S’il parvient à retrouver le géant, il pourra faire pousser un autre haricot. Alors le géant pourra grimper et rejoindre son château dans les nuages.
If he could find the giant, he could grow another beanstalk. Then the giant could climb up and reach his castle in the clouds.
S’il parvient à retrouver le géant, il pourra aussi s’excuser d’être aussi avide.
Jack fait son sac et s’en va dans les Montagnes Brumeuses.
If he could find the giant, he could also apologize for being so greedy.
Jack packs his bag and heads into the Misty Mountains.
Jack a-t-il retrouvé le géant ? A-t-il fait pousser un nouveau haricot grimpant avec le dernier haricot magique ? Personne ne le sait.
Has Jack found the giant? Did he grow a new beanstalk with the last magic bean? Nobody knows.
Mais les gens disent que si vous écoutez attentivement pendant un orage, vous pouvez entendre le grondement de deux géants dansant ensemble dans les nuages.
But people say that if you listen carefully during a thunderstorm, you can hear the rumble of two giants dancing together in the clouds.
