Pasaron tres semanas. El príncipe no podía dormir. No podía dejar de pensar en la hermosa joven del baile. Él esperaba que ella regresara al palacio, pero ella no regresó. Esperaba que ella enviara una carta, pero no llegó ninguna carta.
Three weeks passed. The prince couldn't sleep. He could not stop thinking about the beautiful girl at the ball. He waited for her to return to the palace, but she did not return. He waited for her to send a letter, but no letters came.
Finalmente, en su desesperación, le dio el zapato de cristal a un mensajero confiable y le ordenó que visitara todas las casas del reino.
“¡Encuentra a la chica a la que pertenece este zapato y tráemela!”
Finally, in desperation, he gave the glass shoe to a trusted messenger and ordered him to visit every house in the kingdom.
"Find the girl who this shoe belongs to, and bring her to me!"
El mensajero visitó cientos de casas. En toda casa, las mujeres afirmaban que el zapato de cristal era suyo. Pero cuando se probaban el zapato, sus pies eran demasiado grandes, o demasiado anchos, o demasiado pequeños.
The messenger visited hundreds of houses. At every house, women claimed the glass shoe was theirs. But when they tried on the shoe, their feet were too big, or too wide, or too small.
Finalmente, el mensajero llegó a la casa de Cenicienta. La madrastra de Cenicienta respondió a la puerta.
“¡Por supuesto! ¡Por supuesto! ¡Entre usted!”
Ella condujo al mensajero al comedor, donde esperaban las dos hermanastras.
Finally, the messenger arrived at Cinderella's house. Cinderella’s stepmother opened the door.
"Of course! Of course! Come in!”
She led the messenger into the dining room, where the two stepsisters were waiting.
La hermana mayor dijo: “¡Gracias a Dios! ¡Ese es mi zapato!” Pero cuando se probó el zapato, su pie era demasiado ancho.
La hermana menor dijo: “Hermana tonta… No es tu zapato, ¡es mi zapato!” Pero cuando se probó el zapato, su pie era demasiado pequeño.
The oldest sister said "Thank God! That's my shoe!" But when she tried the shoe, her foot was too wide.
The youngest sister said "Silly sister... It's not your shoe, it's my shoe!" But when she tried the shoe, her foot was too small.
La madrastra dijo: “Quítense de en medio, chicas, no es su zapato. ¡Es MI zapato!” Y se probó el zapato. Pero su pie era demasiado grande.
“¡Oh, qué tonto!” dijo la madrastra. “El zapato debe haber encogido bajo la lluvia…”
The stepmother said "Get out of the way, girls (literally: take yourselves out of the middle), it's not your shoe. It's MY shoe!" and tried the shoe. But her foot was too long.
"Oh how silly!" said the stepmother. "The shoe must have shrunk in (under) the rain..."
Pero el mensajero no se dejó engañar tan fácilmente. “¿Hay otras mujeres en esta casa?” preguntó él.
“Nadie sino nuestra sirvienta, y el zapato, ciertamente, no es de ella…” dijo la madrastra.
But the messenger was not so easily fooled. "Are there any other women in this house?" he asked.
"No one but our serving girl, and the shoe is certainly not hers... " said the stepmother.
“¡Vaya a buscarla inmediatamente! Toda mujer del reino debe probarse el zapato”, insistió el mensajero.
"Fetch her immediately. Every woman in the kingdom must try the shoe," insisted the messenger.
Cuando Cenicienta llegó al comedor, llevaba puestos sus harapos habituales y su rostro estaba cubierto de mugre.
Metió su pie sucio dentro del zapato de cristal y… ¡asombroso! No era demasiado ancho. No era demasiado grande. ¡Encajaba perfectamente!
When Cinderella arrived in the dining room she was wearing her usual rags, and her face was covered in dirt.
She put her dirty foot into the glass shoe and… amazing! It wasn't too wide. It wasn't too long. It fit perfectly!
En voz baja, ella dijo: “Es mi zapato”.
“Por favor, venga conmigo”, dijo el mensajero. Y antes de que la madrastra y las hermanastras de Cenicienta los pudieran detener, el mensajero hizo que Cenicienta saliera apresuradamente por la puerta y entrara en una carroza.
In a quiet voice she said, "It's my shoe."
"Please come with me," said the messenger. And before Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters could stop them, the messenger hurried Cinderella out the door and into a carriage (literally: made Cinderella hurry out the door and get into a carriage).
Cenicienta fue llevada al palacio para reunirse con al príncipe. Ella todavía llevaba puesto su viejo y sucio vestido, y sus brazos, piernas y rostro estaban sucios. Ella miraba al suelo, porque se sentía muy avergonzada.
Cinderella was taken to the palace to meet the prince. She was still wearing her dirty old dress, and her arms, legs and face were dirty. She looked at the floor because she felt so ashamed.
El príncipe tomó la mano de Cenicienta.
“Señorita, por favor, míreme”, pidió él de manera amable.
Y cuando ella levantó la cabeza y él vio sus bondadosos ojos verdes, supo que ella era la mujer de la que él se había enamorado en el baile.
The prince took Cinderella's hand.
"Miss, please look at me," he requested kindly. And when she lifted her head and he saw her kind, green eyes, he knew that she was the woman he had fallen in love with at the ball.
Ellos estaban casados para la siguiente primavera, y pasaron el resto de sus vidas riéndose cada uno de los chistes del otro.
They were married the next spring, and spent the rest of their lives laughing at each other's jokes.
